Today, May 12, 2011, the women’s singles will have their round of 16 in the Ahoy Arena Rotterdam. One of the battles will be between the Chinese Guo Yue and German Wu Jiaduo. Guo Yue is considered to be the big sister for the Chinese Nuping while Wu Jiaduo is Germany’s top female player. After three encounters in the past, Guo Yue was able to post a consistent 4-1 victory against the German player.

The two players have encountered each other three times in their career already and all occurred in the year 2007 - February 15, 2007 for the Qatar Open, May 24 for the world championship, and June 22 for the Volkswagen Cup Japan Open. In all occasions, Guo Yue succeeded against the German player and incidentally scored 4-1 in all matches.

For the Qatar Open, specific scores are: 11-5, 10-12, 11-4, 11-6, and 12-10; For the 2007 world championship: 12-10, 11-4, 10-12, 11-9, and 11-3; For the Japanese Open, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 12-10, and 11-8.

Wu Jiaduo will be turning 34 years old this September. As early as 1996, Wu Jiaduo entered the National Team. In 1998, Wu Jiaduo went to Germany. At first, she haven’t thought of playing for Germany. However, before the 2008 Olympics, Wu Jiaduo grabbed her only opportunity to play in Beijing by joining the German National Team in year 2006. With this regard, Wu Jiaduo said “The Olympics is every athlete’s greatest dream. If that opportunity will come, then I will strive hard for it. So, I took the German nationality.” In 2009, Wu Jiaduo won the European Championship. In last year’s world championship in Moscow, Wu Jiaduo won against Tie Yana and Jiang Huajun of Hong Kong.

Despite recent poor performances, Guo Yue still has a lot of fans due to her excellent talent in the sport. In fact, there are a lot of people considering her as the best choice for a new “sister.” Guo Yue is 11 years younger than Wu Jiaduo, and with her physical and technical capabilities, Guo Yue is no doubt the upper hand. However, Wu Jiaduo’s experience is also a great advantage for her. Now, Guo Yue, will just have to rely on her strengths and use them to her advantage.

For the upcoming match this afternoon in Ahoy Arena, Guo Yue is in a very critical state where she has to prove the recovery of her condition when everybody has witnessed her career in the doldrums. On the other hand, considering the past encounters, Wu Jiaduo surely has prepared for this and has the potential to redeem herself. So, tabletennistas, do you think Guo Yue will still be able to maintain his consistency? Or Wu Jiaduo will finally break Guo Yue’s winning streak against her and cause a major upset for China?
