In the quarterfinals match in the men’s singles event, Chen Qi, unfortunately, was defeated by the European Timo Boll in 1-4. In the previous matches in the competition, Chen Qi posted a promising performance and a good playing condition. However, such goodness wasn’t enough for Timo Boll, who really dominated the entire match. According to Chen Qi his style of service was the main reason for his defeat.

Chen Qi had a fantastic start in the competition. He posted an impressive 4-0 in all first three rounds. In the fourth round, he encountered a challenge but prevailed against Samsonov. However, in the quarterfinals, his luck ended to Timo Boll.

In the past, Chen Qi posted positive results against Timo – 4 wins, 2 losses. After the quarterfinal match, such number of losses increased to three. After the game, Chen Qi said that he has never thought of his performance to be like that. “In the field, some changes caused some accidents, particularly in my serving. When I changed my serving style, the ball usually got caught through the net and it ruined the momentum,” Chen Qi said.

In an interview after the game, Boll acknowledged that Chen Qi is the best serving athlete and today’s performance was unexpected. “There was no way, the ball always got through the net. What can I do?” Chen Qi said with a smile.

“Boll was in a very good condition. Overall, he performed very well and handled the ball excellently today. He was so into the game.” When asked about his thought on the semifinals match between Zhang Jike and Boll, he just said smilingly, “let’s talk in private.”
