More than 30 players in the the men and women event participated in the 2012 US Olympic Trials held in Cary, North Caroline. The system of playing consisted on a qualifying draw, where the 12 qualified players progressed to a final round robin.
Michael Landers was the winner of the men events after scoring nine victories and two defeats. The defeats were against Adam Hugh and Peter Li. The second place was for Barney Reed, who did a 8-3 balance. Reed suffered defeats by hands of Landers, Han Xiao and Grant Li. The third qualifier was Adam Hugh with a 8-3 balance. Hugh's defeats were against Mark Hazinski, Timothy Wang and Barney Reed. The fourth place was got by Timothy Wang with a 8-3 balance. Wang faced defeats against Michael Landers, Peter Li and Reed.
On the other hand, Jun Gao dominated the tournament and didn't lost any match. Ariel Hsing was the second qualifier with nine victories and two defeats. Hsing's defeats were against Gao and Erica Wu. Lily Zhang got the third place with a 9-2 balance. Zhang faced defeat against Gao and Ariel Hsing, while Erica Wu was the last qualifier with nine victories and two defeats too. Wu's defeats were against Jun Gao and Lily Zhang.
Jun Gao is a Chinese-born player, who clinched the silver Olympic medal of the doubles event at 1992 Barcelona. In 1994 Gao moved to United States and then she got the American nationality. Gao competed in the last three Olympic Games. This team is characterised by its youth. Despite their age, Lily Zhang and Ariel Hsing are experienced players, who have participated in world tours, world championships and Olympic Games. Doubtless, these players have many chances in the North American Olympic qualification that will be held also in Cary, North Caroline.
