Ding Ning, Li Xiaoxia, Guo Yue, Guo Yan, and Liu Shiwen successfully overpowered the defending champions from Singapore in the crucial final match in the 2012 World Team Championships. This time, the Chinese players were just too strong for their old rivals Feng Tianwei, Wang Yuegu and Li Jiawei. Eventually, after three matches, China will bring the Corbillon Cup back to their home.   


 

After two years since the Moscow World Championships, the Women Division will once again have the main rivals in table tennis, Singapore and China in the World Championships arena. Two years ago, Singapore overcame the Great Wall. Today, they were in for serious battle.   

Feng Tianwei 1-3 Ding Ning

Feng Tianwei was the first to establish an advantage in the match with 3-1. Ding Ning earned three straight points and overtook to 6-3. However, Feng Tianwei had the right condition and leveled in 6-6, then overtook to 8-6. With a magnificent rally going on, Ding Ning maintained great positioning and came closer to 7-8. Such point gave her the confidence and leveled things in 8-8. After the tie in 9-9, Feng Tianwei got herself the set point advantage in 10-9. Ding Ning was not letting go so easily and leveled in 10-10, then in 11-11. After another tie in 12-12, Ding Ning did not waste anymore opportunities and sealed the first set with 14-12.

The match was still very close in the second set. Both players were making it hard for each other to establish a decent lead. Feng Tianwei having the control with Ding Ning closely trailing from behind. After the tie in 7-7, Feng Tianwei got a 9-7 lead. With her two-serve advantage, Ding Ning got the first to her favor and the other one to Feng Tianwei's set point. Eventually, Feng Tianwei leveled in 1-1 with 11-8. 

After close sets, Ding Ning ensured a lead to herself and had a 6-0 advantage in the third set. At this point, Feng Tianwei had no answers to the attacks from ding Ning and was down in a crushing 0-10. Feng Tianwei managed to break the series of points and scored four straight points. However, Ding Ning didn't give anymore chances to her opponent and sealed a 2-1 advantage with 11-4.

When Ding Ning opened the fourth set with a 5-2 lead, Singapore called for a timeout. After the game resumed, Ding Ning increased her lead further to a confident 9-2. Eventually, Ding Ning sealed the first match with 11-3.    

Wang Yuegu 1-3 Li Xiaoxia

The control at the start of the second set went to Li Xiaoxia in 6-4. But with the advantage of her two serves, Wang Yuegu leveled in 6-6. As the set progressed, Li Xiaoxia reached first to set point advantage in 10-9. Quickly, Li Xiaoxia got the first advantage in 11-9. 

Wang Yuegu opned the second set with 4-2 however her advantage didn't last long as Li Xiaoxia leveled in 4-4. Wang Yuegu actually maintained her control in the set but Li Xiaoxia continued to be persistent and continued to follow closely from behind. Despite an 8-10 deficit, Li Xiaoxia remained mentally strong and positive as she overtook to 11-10. However, Wang Yuegu didn't let go easily and got her third set point. This time, Wang Yuegu was able to seal it with 13-11. 

After winning the previous set, Wang Yuegu carried out her control and was in a 5-3 advantage. This time, Li Xiaoxia wasn't able to react properly to the attacks from Wang Yuegu and was down in 3-7. After Li Xiaoxia managed to come closer to 6-7, Singapore called for a timeout. After the game resumed, Li Xiaoxia's backhand earned her the point to level things in 7-7, and overtook to 8-7. The match progressed closely to setpoint advantage for Li Xiaoxia in 10-9. Once again both players tied in 10-10. When Li Xiaoxia got her second set point in 11-10, Shi Zhihao called for their timeout. After the game resumed, Li Xiaoxia posted a 2-1 lead with 12-10.

Li Xiaoxia returned into the arena with the momentum and was in 8-4 lead. This time, Wang Yuegu was already missing a series of points. Eventually, Li Xiaoxia offered the second point for China with 11-5.

Li Jiawei 0-3 Guo Yue

As the only player with the Olympic experience in the Chinese Team, Guo Yue quickly got the right condition into the match and posted a 6-1 lead. Meanwhile, as the Singaporean hero, Li Jiawei managed to come closer in 4-6. Upon noticing it, Guo Yue increased her lead further to 8-4. After Li Jiawei reached her seventh point, Guo Yue got set point in 10-7. Eventually, a forehand topspin from Guo Yue earned her the first set with 11-8.

Guo Yue was still doing good in the second set as she retained her momentum in a 4-1 lead. As for the Singaporean, Li Jiawei was not having the right answers to Guo Yue's attacks. Guo Yue was in set point with 10-5. Li Jiawei saved one point before Guo yue led in 2-0 with 11-6.

As expected, Li Jiawei didn't let go easily of the match and returned into the arena more aggressive. She nailed the first four points. When Li Jiawei reached her sixth point, Guo Yue crawled up to 5-6. This led Singapore to call for their timeout. After the game resumed, Li Jiawei increased her lead further to 7-5. However, Guo Yue was just too strong this time and overtook to 9-8. After Li Jiawei managed to level in 9-9, Guo Yue got championship point in 10-9 and when Li Jiawei's counter attack went away from the table, Guo Yue sealed a sweep victory with 11-9.  

After three matches, China successfully took the Corbillon Cup from the defending champions. At the same time, their victory was a clear redemption of the team from their defeat in Moscow. As of today, China is the World Women Team Champion! Congratulations to China and good job to Singapore!
