The Women Singles didn't have any upsets in Round 16 where top seeded players entered into the Top 8 of the competition with ease. However, danger was just hanging around the corner and was waiting for the right time to attack.
Shortly after the Round 16, the biggest upset was recorded in the tournament. Top seed Wang Yuegu of Singapore was blocked by the South Korean rising star Seok Ha Jung in the quarterfinal round.
Seok Ha Jung was brave enough to attack the highest Singaporean on the ranking and eventually won a tight match through a wonderful turnaround of 5-11, 7-11, 11-3, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, and 11-5.

After the top seed bid her farewell, the second seed, also from Singapore experienced a different fate. Feng Tianwei was succesful against seventh seed Li Qian in six sets (8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9). In Kobe last week, Feng Tianwei was defeated in the quarterfinals by Kim Kyung Ah.
The third Singaporean in the round and the third Olympic person of the team was not able to progress further. Against the third seed Ai Fukuhara of Japan, Li Jiawei was crushed in four straight sets. Fukuhara is now a semifinalists with 15-13, 11-6, 11-8, and 18-16.
The last slot in the semifinals was earned by no other than the South Korean in form, Kim Kyung Ah. Last week in Japan, Kim Kyung Ah swept her teammate Dang Ye Seo. This week in Santos, it was the same result. Kim Kyung Ah earned 11-5, 11-6, 11-5, and 13-11.
As for the Doubles event, unexpected results were recorded. In the upper half of the draw, the South Korean duo of Dang Ye Seo and Seok Ha Jung, eighth seeds, ousted no less than the top seeds from Japan, Ai Fukuhara and Shiho Ono. Dang and Seok scored 11-8, 11-6, 11-7, and 11-9.
In the lower half, after facing defeat in the Singles, Singaporeans and seventh ranked Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu swept the sixth seeds Japanese-Polish tandem of Yuki Nonaka and Kinga Stefanska. Li and Wang posted 13-11, 11-6, 11-7, and 11-6.
The Women Singles will continue it's competition on June 17, 12:15 local time with the semifinals while the Doubles will have its conclusion on the same day, 16:00 local time.
