Surprisingly, Michael Maze is the first player who secured a place in quarterfinals after sweeping with the third seed Jun Mizutani by 4:0 (11:7, 11:6 11:4 and 11:6). Therefore, Maze will face Dimitrij Ovtcharov in quarterfinals who beat Austria's Chen Weixing in four close games.
Zhang Jike secured a place in the next round too. However, the world champion suffered much more than expected to beat experienced Vladimir Samsonov in seven games. Kim Hyok Bong, who beat Joo Saehhyuk in the previous round, from North Corea was stopped by Hong Kong's Jiang Tianyi as Jiang overcame him by 4:3 and 15:13 in the last game. So Zhang Jike will meet Jiang Tianyi in quarterfinals.
Seiya Kishikawa just stood victorious over Korea's Oh Sangeun by 4:1 and will have a difficult task against Wang Hao in the next round who overcame Singaporean Gao Ning by 4:1. Chinese Taipei's Chuang Chih Yuan emerged successfully over Croacia's Andrej Gacina by 4:2. Adrian Crisan from Romania also surprised after defeating German star Timo Boll in five games and Ovtcharov is the olny one who keeps alive German hopes for an Olympic medal. Probably, it wasn't a big surprise for the German player who said after his victory over Noshad Alamiyan that the match against Crisan wouldn't be easy.
