Surprises in the first round of the men singles event. Egypt's El-Sayed Lashin caused upset after beating Sweden Par Gerell in seven close games. However, other players such as Jean-Michel Saive, Paul Drinkhall and William Henzell emerged successfully in their matches. Rest of the matches of the first round have already started.

The men singles event has started with an upset in the first round. Sweden's Per Gerell lost in the first match to Egypt's El-Sayed in seven close games. Gerell won the first game but Lashin recovered and got the next three games. The Swedish player fough back and managed to put the score at 3:3 but the Egyptian player prevailed in crucial points and secured his victory.

Carlos Machado from Spain was surprised by Quadri Aruna from Nigaria and fell by 2:4. William Henzell from Australia also progressed to the second round after defeating Hungary's Adam Pattantyus by 4:1. Latvia's Maatiss Burgis overcame Canada's Pierre-Luc Hinse by 4:3. Gustavo Tsuboi, former Latin American champion, was beaten by young Soumyajit Ghosh from India by 2:4.

Local player Paul Drinkhall didn't have problems in his first round as he beat Kuwait's Ibrahem Al-Hasan by 4:0. Oleksandr Didukh from Ukraine suffered to defeat Paraguay's Marcelo Aguirre by 4:3 and reached the next round. Legendary Jean-Michel Saive also posted a victory in his first match over Serbia's Marko Jevtovic. Iran's raising star Noshad Alamiyan, who beat Wang Liqin at the 2012 Asian Cup, booked a place in the next round too as he overcame Australian Justin Han by 4:0.

Former world champion Jorgen Persson is also in the next round of the men singles event after standing victorious over Nigeria's Segun Toriala by 4:1. Hungary's Daniel Zwick beat Allan Bentsen from Denmark by 4:1.

Brazil has no more representatives in the singles event as Hugo Hoyama, who was 3:1 up in the score, lost to Poland's Wang Zengyi in a thrilling match. Italy's Mihai Bobocica is also in the next round by beating Cuba's Andy Pereira by 4:0.

Argentina's Liu Song just overcame Congo's Suraju Saka by 4:0 and secured a place in the second round. Egypt's Omar Assar stood victorious over Ukraine's Yaroslav Zhmudenko by 4:1 and also got the next round. After long seven games, Dominican Republic's Lin Ju beta Kim Song Nam from North Korea and is the last player who secured a place in teh second round.

The second round will continue on Sunday.
