Wang Liqin has won three world championships, in 2001, 2005 and 2007. But with the increase in age and the impact of teenagers in the team, Wang Liqin's records and presence slowly decline.
Before the Rotterdam Championships, Wang Liqin was not able to get direct qualification and had to battle for his opportunity to be in the Singles. However, Wang Liqin did not mind his rather tough journey.
"As the older athlete, every game means an opportunity whether it is international or domestic competitions particularly that the Rotterdam championships was the last individual world championships before the London Olympics. It was a test for each athlete and it was the same for me." Wang Liqin said.
In Rotterdam, Wang Liqin was blocked by the much younger Shandong player, Zhang Jike in the quarterfinals of the Men Singles.
Due to age, a lot were thinking that the Rotterdam Championships could be his last individual world championships. As for this issue, Wang Liqin did not give a clear answer.
"It is hard to say. If my condition after the London Olympics will be good, then I hope it (Rotterdam championships) will not be my last." Wang Liqin concluded.
Wang Liqin ushered the 2012 with absences in competitions. Late last year, Liu Guoliang released the names of their new Fab 5. Unfortunately, Wang Liqin was not one of them. With this series of circumstances, Wang Liqin's image within the team is slowly fading. Could his wish still be granted in the next World Championships?
Here is a video of Wang Liqin against Zhang Jike in the last World Championships in Rotterdam.
