Xu Xin started the 2014 with a successful defence in the ITTF Grand Finals in Dubai. According to him, such victory was not just a championship title but confidence to do better in the future. However, just weeks after, in the Squad Trials, Xu Xin failed against Zhang Jike and Ma Long, placing him in third place. As a mentor, Wang Liqin would like Xu Xin to use such opportunity to bounce back.

Jinling Evening News. An ITTF Grand Finals title ushered the 2014 of Xu Xin but just after a few weeks, he wasn't able to maintain such momentum and lost to Zhang Jike and Ma Long.

Xu Xin's start of 2014 has its ups and downs. The first international competition was the ITTF Grand Finals where Xu Xin participated as the second seed. Following a defeat against Fan Zhendong in the Austria Open in 2013, a lot were anticipating on the performance of Xu Xin in Dubai.

The crowd was treated to a second encounter between Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong. This time, Xu Xin proved his worth and defeated the youngest member of the National Team, Fan Zhendong in 4-1. Xu Xin went into the finals and faced another big opponent, Ma Long.

As expected, it was a close encounter with Xu Xin winning the title, a successful defence. After the match, Xu Xin said that fighting Ma Long is always hard so he was really happy to post a victory this time. Moreover, he planned to win more against Ma Long in the future.

Just weeks after, Xu Xin's plan was placed into a test as the Chinese Team had their Squad Trials for the 2014 World Team Championships. Since the trials was played in a big Round Robin, each player had to fight each other. Xu Xin started well in the trials after he won all his matches in the opening day, unlike Zhang Jike and Ma Long.

Xu Xin remained powerful against Yan An but against Zhang Jike and Ma Long, he lost. In addition, he also lost to the young player, Yan An. Eventually, he finished third with 8 wins and 3 losses, missing the direct qualification for the World Championships.

If Xu Xin wanted a much safer position in the Team, its not enough to defeat the younger players but try to catch up with Zhang Jike and Ma Long as well.

Last year, Wang Liqin gave him sort of an advice. "In the Chinese Team, your brilliant moments are not usually in the good times but in the most difficult times. As long as you can rebound from those difficult moments, then is already indicates that your potential is very big."

Wang Liqin and Xu Xin are both from Shanghai. As a mentor, Wang Liqin would like Xu Xin to use such opportunity to bounce back. Xu Xin still has time to prove himself and it would be very interesting for the table tennis world if he would be able to challenge more Zhang Jike and Ma Long.
