Dimitrij Ovtcharov had an adventurous journey to 2014 European Team Championships. He traveled to Lisbon to be a reserve player but there was a change of plans after Patrick Franziska's injury. Ovtcharov had to be on time to play against Hungary but he faced some difficulties: flight delay and a car accident.

Germany hasn't had a break in these days. Last week Dimitrij Ovtcharov took his wisdom teeth off and his participation wasn't confirmed until Tuesday. On Monday Patrick Baum withdrew due to his father's death

Jorg Rosskopf had only three players available to play in the tournament: Timo Boll, Patrick Franziska and Steffen Mengel. There were no problems in the opening game, but something unexpected happened in the second day. Patrick Franziska got injured in the match against Portugal and Germany still had to face Hungary in the last match of the group phase.

Fortunately Dimitrij Ovtcharov was on his way to Lisbon, but his flight was delayed by 2 hours. While he was waiting at the airport, he received a SMS, which said that he had to play. Finally he took the flight and arrived in Lisbon at 17:45. The match was scheduled at 19:00 and he got off the plane at 18:05. Ovtcharov was on his way to MEO Arena, but his car got involved in an accident. Fortunately, nobody got injured and he got to the venue 8 minutes before the match.

After the match, Ovtcharov said that that was the most turbulent journey of his life.
