As the hosts of this week’s competition, players from the South Korean Team certainly would want to give an impressive performance and Joo Saehyuk delivered that. Against Germany’s Steffen Mengel, the defensive player managed to get through alive in seven sets. Meanwhile, South Korean pairs posting positive results in the Men’s Doubles. 

ITTF. The Korea Open has reached its penultimate day but things are just starting to get interesting especially for the hosting team. Joo Saehyuk survived the second round. 

The lower half of the Men’s Singles had their round 16 today and the second seed, Koki Niwa overcame Li Ping of Qatar. He scored 13-11, 11-9, 6-11, 10-12, 11-5, 11-2. Aside from Niwa, Masaki Yoshida also posted victory after surviving his teammate Taku Takakiwa in 4-3. 

Kim Donghyun defended South Korea well following his strong performance against Japanese Yuto Muramatsu. He scored 11-2, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5. 

The veteran Joo Saehyuk certainly is the pride of South Korea. With his age, the defensive player managed to get through the round victoriously against Steffen Mengel of Germany. Joo Saehyuk survived in 4-11, 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 2-11, 11-7, 11-3. 

Women’s Singles 

Last week, Ai Fukuhara didn’t have a very long exposure in the Japan Open. Today, she sealed her place in the quarterfinals. She defeated her younger teammate Miu Hirano in 11-6, 11-6, 11-13, 5-11, 11-5, 11-8. 

Miyu Maeda joins Fukuhara in the next round after she defeated Jeon Jihee of South Korea in 4-1. Shan Xiaona of Germany is also doing well in the competition. She just defeated the World Mixed Doubles Champion, Yang Haeun in a full stretch match. 

Seo Hyowon managed to advance into the next round after her powerful performance against Japanese Misaki Morizono. She imposed control in 4-0. 

Men’s Doubles 

Jun Mizutani had an early exit in the Singles after losing to Jang Woojin. Today, the Japanese seed somehow made his revenge as he, together with Masaki Yoshida, swept the partnership of Jang Woojin and Seo Junghwa. 

Mizuatni and Yoshida advance into the semifinals with 11-5, 13-11, 11-9. 

Other semifinalists are coming from the hosting team: Jung Youngsik/Kim Minseok, Jeong Sangeun/Lee Sangsu, Cho Seungmin/Kim Minhyeok.  

Women’s Doubles 

The amazing tandem of Miu Hirano and Mima Ito imposed control in today’s round in the Doubles. Together, they swept Barbora Balazova and Din Meshref. They progress into the semifinals. Other Japanese pair, Hina Hayata and Hitomi Sato also advance in the competition. 

Two for Japan, two for South Korea as well. Choi Hyojoo/Lee Zion and Jeon Jihee/Yang Haeun are still in the running for the title.
