Top seeds had a successful debut at the 2016 German Open but Dimitrij Ovtcharov struggled to reach victory. The German player went to great lenghts to beat Egypt's Omar Assar. On the contrary, Ma Long, Zhang Jike and Timo Boll posted sweeping victories. 

Dimitrij Ovtcharov had a hard debut at the 2016 German Open. The European champion, second seed, was challenged by Egypt's Omar Assar in the first round of the main draw. Assar was in the lead at first but the host player had the last word, he won by 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7, 15-17, 9-11 and 11-7. 

Ma Long had a different experience in his debut. He gave no chance to Denmark's Jonathan Groth and sealed his victory by 11-2, 11-6, 11-7 and 11-3. Zhang Jike overcame Panagiotis Gionis by 11-13, 11-7, 11-8, and 11-4. Timo Boll swept eith Croatia's Frane Kojic by 11-1, 11-4, 11- and 11-4. 

Joo Saehyuk was one of the victims in the first rounds. He lost to Croatia's Andrej Gacina by 2-11, 11-6, 6-11, 7-11, 11-5 and 9-11. Tiago Apolonia also said good-bye to the competition. He fell against 7-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 8-11 and 7-11. Quadri Aruna had no chance against Chuang Chih-Yuan. He faced defeat by 8-11, -11, 4-11 and 8-11. 

Gao Ning was defeated by Poland's Wang Zengyi by 10-12, 9-11, 7-11 and 8-11, while Kenta Matsudaira fell against Hong Kong's Wong Chun Ting by 8-11, 9-11, 9-11 and 8-11. 

Matches of the second round: Ma Long vs Koki Niwa, Kaii Yoshida vs Marcos Freitas, Fang Bo vs Wang Zengyi, Wong Chun Ting vs Zhang Jike, Timo Boll vs Andrej Gacina, Li Ping vs Vladimir Samsonov, Chuang Chih-Yuan vs Yan An, Tang Peng vs Dimitrij Ovtcharov.
