Segun Toriola was one of the last two African players who booked a place for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro. The Nigerian player overcame Congo Brazzaville's Suraju Saka, who also qualified to Rio, by 116, 9-11, 11-1, 11-1 and 11-9 in the final match.
With this victory, Toriola qualified to his 7th Olympic Games and joined the "Seven Club", also made of Jorgen Persson, Zoran Primorac and Jean-Michel Saive.
In the women's event, the qualifiers were Nigeria's Offiong Edem and Tunisia's Safa Saidani. In the final match, Edem overcame Saidani by 11-6, 11-4, 11-4 and 13-11.
